Perceptions in the Media: Zoomer Edition

Most “Zoomers” or peoples of the Generation Z use isntragram or some form of social media. What makes us different than those generations who use social media before us is that we have learned to curate and exploit the use of creating an online persona. We personally use Instagram or other social media’s to portray the best forms of ourselves. If you’re looking at this from a far back, it doesn’t seem like much however, as a break it down further in this post it may seem a little more serious.

Left and right people no thrive to be part of this cookie cutter personality. The desire they have to be just like everyone else is so strong because of the use of social media. The curate our Instagram’s to look like your friends, because if you don’t did you really live and experience? Left and right people no thrive to be part of this cookie cutter personality. The desire they have to be just like everyone else is so strong because of the use of social media. We curate our Instagram‘s to look like your friends, because if you don’t did you really live and experience?

I wanted to apply some of the senses I read about in the article, and using some of the examples and ideas that are used in the rules of perception in communication. The communication in the zoomer eyes is the lack there of. To further explain the main focus that I will be talking about is Instagram. The other brakes perception down into structural, and functional. To be able to further analyze and apply their ideas, I will be using a subjects Instagram to explain.

When you look at this picture automatically, your brain “decodes” it. Through past experiences, culture expectations, motivation, moods, attitudes we have towards that subject or in this case social media outlets used by zoomers. Our brains only taken what we see and what we comprehend, with that case we do many assumptions based on our perception. Based on this Instagram post, this person has curated the idea of a very aesthetic person. The author describes this as a transnational form of expression. It may seem that this person may have their life together because of the aesthitic that they present however, just like the room, when taking a step back it is just a simple layout that correlates nothing to who they are as a person. In other words, when we correlate someones personal instagram with the aesthtic they present, it may not always mathc up. This can also be seen in Tinder Profiles when someoe presents themselves in a manner that is not the same as in real life.

Another point made by the author is the Anti prejudice cartoon and how the intention of the creator was to stop the use of prejudice by bringing it up in a satirical light however it portrayed the exact opposite response. I relate this to our generation in how we must be PC (politically correct) in almost every aspect of social media or we will be dragged. Thoughts cannot be shared anymore without the fear of being constrained into a certain type of comedy that everyone can enjoy and not be offended by.

These are some collected tweets that revolve around the Zoomer Generation’s “Cancel Culture” which is used when a celebrity messes up.

All of these censors pertaining to the Instagram post and the tweet all relate with one another through an underlying factor of psychological filters that we put our thoughts through before anyone is able to perceive it. To put it in another way, people the way that we exert information becomes filtered in a form where we know people would best perceive it. The audience of the media is what controls the intention which in turn the perception as well. This is clearly seen in my generation as a zoomer as we quickly try to please those around us in a fashion that will be the least critical.

The Value of Depression in Society

Mental Illness is a topic that becomes more prominent in societal issues as time passes. The numbers of diagnosed people increase with every generation with more reasons to be mentally ill. Statistics showing how people who lack social encounter to a certain degree have higher risks for depression, but what does it all mean. The word depression itself was a term that always fascinated me ever since I was in middle school when the word first started making itself apparent. In the millennial generation, the work depression is used as a light term when the root of the word means so much more.

I had a large difficulty choosing a word that would best connect to me and was prevalent in society in an interesting way. It only dawned on me to use this word as I revisited my old high school as of recent and talked to some students in the International Baccalaureate (IB) program about how it makes them feel and the amount of rigor they must go through. These observations do not apply to all students but from what I had gathered at my time there, more and more students threw around the phrase “I have depression” around more often than when I was in high school. The amount of schoolwork and pressure a high school student must go through is rough and any AP or IB student has it even worse however, is it fair for a student to self-diagnose themselves with a serious mental illness without truly knowing the meaning?

Depression comes with the following symptoms:

  • Feeling sad or having a depressed mood
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed
  • Changes in appetite — weight loss or gain unrelated to dieting
  • Trouble sleeping or sleeping too much
  • Loss of energy or increased fatigue
  • Increase in purposeless physical activity (e.g., hand-wringing or pacing) or slowed movements and speech (actions observable by others)
  • Feeling worthless or guilty
  • Difficulty thinking, concentrating or making decisions
  • Thoughts of death or suicide

Although a student may check off three or more items on the list, it does not truly determine their mental state as the question that remains at hand is if it is chemically caused or situationally caused. These students use the word depression in a light term that I deem to make the word less powerful to the point where it has almost lost its meaning. The main question one should ask themselves is are they sad, or are they truly clinically depressed. Knowing the difference between each word is what makes the social stigma of it being a light word, go away.

Ever since the more popular use of “depression” I always veered away for using that word myself. I would always say I am sad or “just not feeling it today”. It was only recently that I found out that I do have depression and that there is  a real explanation on why I feel a certain way. For me, these feelings do not change on a day to day basis based on my work or school load. These feelings remain constant on a larger time frame that many millennials who use the word the most do not tend to have. Depression is not a light term and should not be used as such. Millennials have used the term out of its’ high weight value to the point where it is just another mood such as happy or sad. This action sets back mental health awareness in a way that is a less progressive as it should be, especially in this day in age.

My Writing History

Growing up, reading and writing rough subjects. Language is all around us and is unavoidable. In the grand scheme of things, we are taught young it is an essential part of life, and that we need it to function in society. Although personally, I do not enjoy writing for pleasure, I appreciate the work of those who participate in it as it is a beautiful for of art.

My earliest memory with writing is of course this one assignment they had a student in kindergarten. It would be short stories about your day, or what you did over the weekend. As I look back, I remember each assignment being short simple and sweet. The first real writing I ever did was probably when I made short fictional stories. This is one of my fondest memories in writing because of how I approached the style ready. Are used to write about fairy tale stories with princesses and dragons. A very baseline one page fairy tale story, I don’t remember much of that story now but I remember getting in trouble because of how many copies are printed on accident when I was seven. As a kid I thought delivery and physical Appearance was important so I decided to do every line a different color of the rainbow.

“The setting of my short stories”

As a kid since this was the first stages of Microsoft word, I also use the word hard and fancy pictures that they used to have in my stories. I interpret this in terms of writing history that I just wrote just to be able to decorate the grand picture at the end. I only did writing when necessary, and when it was for my pleasure it was to seek satisfaction and how the product looked instead of what content was really there.

When it comes down to that, I do not think I am the most literate person in my life. As bad as that sentence may seem, I know many people that love writing and can do it all day with a passion. I don’t have a specific person in mind when it comes to who is the most literate person in my life, however I do know what makes one. These people usually have characteristics such as how they love to read or they excel at every English assignment ever assigned to them. In my eyes a good writer is able to interpret text fairly easily and is someone who can easily articulate whatever they feel. If there’s one thing I learned from Them, it is that reading does help them come up with ideas and forming sentences structures. With that in mind, if one would like to increase their vocabulary and broaden their sentence structure, they should read more as cliché as it may sound.

In life there always are drawbacks and things you do. For me and writing however, my drawback is be able to be creative and original. What I mean by that is if I don’t have a stencil or something to go off of, I usually write a horrible essay or turn in a bad assignment. My lack of a crutch in writing makes me a weaker writer than I already am. On top of that, my reading comprehension and attention are not always up to par with others that maybe good at writing. My fear of going in blind and taking on assignment head-on scares me so much. Without any examples, I struggle greatly and fear the worst when it comes time to turn in my paper.

This meme explains my approach on assignments and how I don’t tend to them until it is way past the due date.

This fear has lessened however when certain teachers give aid such as idea starters and also essay examples. With aid from those around me, I slowly begin to be better in writing. Although that doesn’t mean I love it, my small academic struggle for it becomes less of a injury and more like a small bruise.

A meme that I found funny with the most simple use of writing.

In a more leisure aspect of writing, I love using Twitter. This writing style in someways can be more critiqued than actual writing. The questions that pop in my head when I write a tweet are “Will this be funny” or “Would people retweet this”. The small criticisms that I already placed upon myself greatly impact the direction of where I want to take my tweet. This tunnel vision allows a direct flight in conforming to what others think. Although this is the way I tweet, others may tweet differently. I choose to conform to what others want in my tweets, just like I choose to conform to the best fit writing style that I think others would enjoy. It’s sort of gives you insight of my personality and the way I think which is why writing is one of the greatest tools into entering someone’s mind.

Many things fly by my mind on every day basis. One of those topics is the future. It’s mostly what will it be like and how will we function as society, but since were talking about writing I have many predictions on how we will progress. For starters growing up we didn’t have text to speech. This new invention is something I use almost every essay and every assignment. I use it because although it may not be faster, it is an easier way for me to organize my thoughts instead of just typing whatever comes across my mind. Another innovation that I’ve recently used is an erasable notebook. You can wear whatever you want in it, and then erase it with a microfiber wet towel and it will be brand new again. All you have to do is just scan the papers before you wipe. This is helpful in the aspect of the brainstorming stage. A person like me again has too many ideas and too little time. To be able to freely work without the pressures of wasting paper or any of the space creates an ease of mind when in this process.

Although I may argue that we are already living in the future with the small innovations, the future may have greater things for us as well. For starters, I do not see a pen and pencil with paper as being a part of every day use. In this near future, we will either just use our laptops or phones to write essays. Another scary thought is “suggest speech” but essay edition. This meeting the user only and putting a few ideas in a few words of theirs and letting A.I. figure out a maneuver the rest. This lifeless form of writing may take over our society or may help those with any disability to convey their own passion for writing.

About Me

My preferred name is Caramia but I also go by Mia. I am a freshman at CSN and I major in political science. The field of interest that I would like to participate in after college is law. More forward, I would like to be in politics. I enjoy playing music and cheering for CSN. I enjoy writing because it is a great creative outlet for many people. My biggest “fear” is organization in papers. I feel as if I have many great idea’s that get clouded in a messy paper. If I could teach one thing on my platform, it would be simply ways n saving the world we live in through small changes in everyone lives. I wish to preserve the earth for s long as it can and with that, change the world for the better.

Introduce Yourself (Example Post)

This is an example post, originally published as part of Blogging University. Enroll in one of our ten programs, and start your blog right.

You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.

Why do this?

  • Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
  • Because it will help you focus you own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.

The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.

To help you get started, here are a few questions:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about?
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
